BINALAKSHMI NEPRAM (EAST)


At the age of 14, Binalakshmi Nepram witnessed a massacre in her village at the hands of security forces. She grew up in insurgency prone Manipur, where 20,000 men have lost their lives in the last 5 decades, leaving behind only women. Nepram founded the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network, taking 80 such women under her care and helping them financially earn a living. What Bina gives these women is dignity and the promise of a secure future.

CHANDRALEKHA (NORTH)


As a daughter of Nat Purwa, a village close to Lucknow, where every girl is raised to be a prostitute, Chandralekha had no choice but to get into the profession. But she's spent her life making sure the next generation of girls break out of the 300 year old tradition. She got a job in the local Anganwadi School and despite threats convinced most families to send their daughters there. She even helped the girls of Nat Purwa get married and employed. Lack of funds has forced her to shut down her self help group for women. But her fight is on.

AJEET SINGH (NORTH)


In the sacred city of Varanasi, trafficking of minor girls was common. That's till Ajeet Singh decided to take the pimps and brokers head on. He knew breaking the police-pimp nexus would not be easy, so he gathered thousands of citizens and rescued over 50 minor girls. His organization Guria is also fighting over 200 cases against child traffickers in courts. Today Shivdaspur, the red light area of Varanasi, wears a different look.

A teacher in Hyderabad, Grace Nirmala was moved by stories of joginis, young village girls in parts of Andhra Pradesh who were married off to the village deity and then used and abused by village men. She fought to abolish this heinous practice and even set up a centre where rescued joginis and their children live.

AMIRBI SIKANDER SHEIKH (WEST)
Amirbi is a madame who runs a brothel at the Swaroop Talkies area in Sangli, Maharashtra. The red light area has the second highest number of HIV/AIDS patients after Mumbai. But she wants to change that. She runs what she calls a ZERO budget school for sex workers where they are taught English, Hindi, Maths and basic life skills. Empowered with education, the women are now sending their children to government schools and some of these children now help educate their mothers.
