Ela Bhatt
Ela Bhatt, a Gandhian, was one of the first to start initiatives to bring together women in the unorganized sector. In 1972, she founded the Self-Employed Women's Association or SEWA. Her pioneering work has been in creating institutions for the lowest rung of working women and making them self-reliant. SEWA has over 10 lakh members today. Under the SEWA bank Ela Bhatt pioneered micro-finance programmes. Her knowledge and dedication led to her nomination for the Rajya Sabha and Planning Commission. Ela Bhatt has received international recognition and various awards, prominent among them, the Ramon Magsaysay award for community leadership
